Kirie vector cut-out for Alight Motion

Image in, layers out

Trace a drawing into shapes you can move one by one.

Kirie finds each colour region in your image and cuts it into its own contour. The export is an Alight Motion scene where every contour is a separate layer, anchored at its own centre, so a strand of hair can be pulled without dragging the face along. An SVG of the same shapes comes with it.

01 Source

PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, or SVG. Up to 24 MB. Large images are scaled down before tracing.

02 Trace

Kirie reads the picture, then fills in the colours, cleanup, detail and canvas size. Turn this off to take over.

10

More colours means more pieces. Flat art usually needs 6 to 12.

55

Higher detail follows the outline more closely and adds points. Lower detail smooths small wobbles away.

60

Zero keeps straight segments between points. Higher values bend the curve through them.

16 px

Off drops the block that fills the frame, which is usually the backdrop. Turn it on for a drawing that runs edge to edge.

Shape limit and updates
420

The smallest pieces are dropped first if the count goes over.

Background

Transparent output needs a transparent scene in Alight Motion too.

Scene timing

Shapes are static for the whole scene. Animation is up to you once it is imported.

One empty null layer holds the whole cut-out. Every shape is still its own layer.

    How the cut is made

    1. 01

      Reduce the palette

The picture is scaled to a working size, then sorted into a small palette with a median cut and a few k-means passes. Every pixel ends up with one palette index.

    2. 02

      Follow the edges

Regions of one colour are joined into components. Kirie walks the cracks between pixels, smooths the staircase, and drops points that sit on a straight run.

    3. 03

      Cut and place

Each contour becomes a cubic path. Shapes are ordered by area, the big ones behind, so a small highlight lands on top of the face it belongs to.

    4. 04

      Write the scene

The XML uses the layout Alight Motion 5 writes: one shape element per contour, the outline in a path tag, and the anchor at the centre of that contour.
